Herbarium

Herbarium Center's Website...

Herbarium is an indoor space where specimens of dried plants (herb) are stored under special care procedures. The specimens are collected by using certain methods and techniques. In the light of this information, a Herbarium centre is established as a data center for researchers who carry out studies on biology, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy and on other fields.

According to the latest records, the first storage of dried plants on cardboards was done by Lucca Ghini (1490-1556).

Herbariums so far made up to the time of Linneaus were made by affixing herbariums on cardboards and after binding, stored vertically on shelves. Linneaus abandoned this method and started another method through which each herbarium is attached one by one and stored in horizontal position.

The first researchers initially stored the samples in their own collections and then started to exchange them with herbarium centers.

PURPOSE
Studying the plants of the island through scientific methods, carrying out studies on plants that are beneficial for health and have economic values, establishing scientific relations with other herbarium centres in the world by exchanging dried samples of herbarium and catalogues of seeds, ensuring protection of endangered species of plants, introducing these plants to students and public.

PRELIMINARIES AND TECHNIQUES
Samples to be collected must embody roots, stems, blossoms, and fruits. If there is no fruit and blossom at the same moment on a plant, then it must be collected at different times. The plant to be collected must be unharmed with shapely leaves, blossomed, and its fruits and seeds must be ripe.

INTERCHANGING, LENDING AND SENDING RECOMMENDATIONS
Redundant samples out of collected samples can be exchanged with other herbarium centers. By this way the samples could not be collected get involved in the collection. However, if the sample is the only one of its kind, it is sent to the other herbariums on temporary basis. Considering that all these facilities are carried out in cooperation with other herbarium centers at the same time, a careful and thorough study must also be carried out at the herbarium centre to avoid any mistakes. The numbers and labels of samples kept in the herbarium and samples sent over to other centers are the same. The specialist or researcher who carries out naming and labeling process returns the list on which names of plants are written opposite to numbers. Recording process of samples sent over or received in are arranged by registering these samples on specifically designed registration forms.
